The Levels
There are five levels for both, Maths and English functional skills exams. Both subjects follow the same process. Starting at entry-level 1, then entry-level 2, entry-level 3, level 1 and finally, level 2. Level 2 is a GCSE equivalent and a qualification that universities recognise.
The Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications are equivalent to a GCSE grade C or level 4. If you did not receive a GCSE in Maths or English, you can take the Functional Skills Maths Level 2; and Functional Skills English Level 2 exams. It may be a necessity by universities and employers for you to have these qualifications.
The first four levels of Functional Skills Qualifications help prepare you for the Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications. They are beneficial if you do not feel confident sitting the Level 2 exam first. Pass Functional Skills are an expert provider for these qualifications. Their exams are Ofqual regulated, and on their website, you can find in-depth revision materials.
Exam Boards
The most taken exam each year is the City and Guilds Functional Skills Level 2 qualification. Edexcel and City and Guilds are two of the largest exam boards, providing English and Maths Functional Skills. Even though different awarding bodies offer the exams, they mainly have the same government-set curriculum. Several functional skills courses are available; it would be beneficial to see which one is better for you as they all have different features.

Is there funding for the Functional Skills exam?
There is some funding from the government for the functional skills courses but, not everyone can apply for it. If you are over the age of 19, you will not get any funding from the government. There are other routes, such as apprenticeships programmes but, we cannot guarantee that you will get the funds. If you want the cheapest exams, you should look at MME and Pass Functional Skills. They provide Functional Skills Maths and English online exams and courses.
